Humans can become addicted to praise. “You’re so successful!” “You did an amazing job.” “Wow, good for you!”
If you are using praise as your measuring stick (or how many likes you get, or how many Christmas cards you receive, or how many medals and trophies are in your home), then the moment there is a break in that type of feedback, your self worth can deteriorate. Getting caught on the hamster wheel of ‘Am I good enough? Do you like me?” is an express ride to hell.
When compliments no longer have their talons gripping you, then insults and accusations lose their hold as well. You are anchored from within. Your vision remains steadfastly on your higher self, your inner truth, and your dharma regardless of how others view you.
“For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.” Mother Teresa
Exercise:
Pay attention to your conditional offerings - things you do with the belief that you will receive something in return such as money, praise, loyalty, companionship. Just witness how you are bound by the promises of payoff. What are you learning about yourself? Is this who and what you wish to be?
